Transforming Health Professions Education: Social Mission, Equity, and Community

Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Award Nominations

The Beyond Flexner Alliance is now accepting nominations for the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Awards for Excellence in Social Mission at the 2020 Conference. The purpose of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Awards is to recognize outstanding leadership in promoting social mission in health professions education.  Social mission is defined as activities or initiatives that teach, model, or improve community engagement, diversity, disparities reduction, value based care, or engagement with the social determinants of health.  Social mission enhancement means making programs not only better, but fairer.


The award will be granted in the following categories:  individual, program, institution, and lifetime achievement. Awardees will receive $2,000 in direct funds, $2,000 to produce a short video shared at the ceremony, travel and lodging to the conference, and a crystal award acknowledging their achievement. In 2020 the Beyond Flexner Alliance will also be presenting a “Rising Star” award to a young activist and innovator in the health professions who is invested in bringing change to their field.

  • Lifetime achievement (late-career/retired/emeritus)  



Submission Questions:

  • Summary of how this nominee has advanced the social mission of health professions education including how they have incorporated IPE principles (Interprofessional Education) in their work. (who they are and what they have done)
  • Summary of how individuals, the community, and/or society have benefited from these activities (societal impact of activities described above)
  • Institutional endorsement
